Autograph letter signed : [n.p.], to his patron William, Lord Cowper, Lord Chancellor, [?1719].

Sending him a flattering poem, "ODE to the Lord Chancellor Cowper in the Year 1717. --In Allusion to Horace Lib 2. Ode 20." This Ode is included in the letter, and Hughes notes that it was written "by the accident of having Horace for my companion in a Sick Chamber, and fancying I had discover'd a new Sense of one of his Odes," which he claims has been misinterpreted by commentators. Thirty-two lines of verse, with some alterations and deletions in another hand (William Duncombe?).
